The historic village of Gokayama in Nanto, Japan
Listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1995. The cabins are well-known for their architectural style of Gasshō-zukuri, meaning the ‘prayer hands construction style’. It is named because its steep roof resembles two hands joined in prayer. Such construction is essential for shedding snow during winter.
Visit one of the cabins in Gokayama, or the nearby shirakawa-gō for an authentic Japanese experience.
